Between 2009 and 2015 Volkswagen installed software on models which allowed them to cheat pollution testing, making their cars appear more environment friendly. The software, aka as ‘defeat devices’, allowed the cars to pass emissions tests by switching on the emissions control software when under test conditions. When the car was not being tested, the software was switched off, and the cars emitted up to 40 times more nitrogen oxide.
Only certain models were fitted with the defeat device, but it is thought around 11 million cars had the device installed over the six year period.
The German car makers are offering US car owners up $10,000 each in compensation; but so far, they are yet to offer deals to any other countries.
We represent thousands of victims here in the UK as we fight for justice and compensation – and we stand by our Canadian friends who are also seeking justice as victims of the scandal.
Canadian customers are becoming as frustrated with Volkswagen as the rest of us are, with hopes of a decision of a deal to be made at the end of July still yet to be decided.
A statement was released by Volkswagen Canada saying that “Our hope is to provide remedies to Canadians on pace with U.S. customers” – but so far, this has not been the case; and our clients here in the UK are demanding to know why the German automotive giants are not even looking at similar deals for us!
When the provisional settlement was reached with U.S. customers, a statement was issued to Canadian Volkswagen customers saying that similar negotiations may be made with them, but that the “settlement details coming out of the U.S. court proceedings may not apply to Canada”.
Discussions are still currently ongoing, and no information can be divulged from the talks that Volkswagen Canada is having with the Ontario Superior Court.
Canadian customers are becoming more and more frustrated with Volkswagen as times passes by and they continue to potentially lose money on their affected vehicles.
Volkswagen do not believe EU customers have suffered a loss, as Volkswagen say they can fix their cars and will therefore not have to pay compensation.
As Volkswagen attempts to fix European cars, the company believes that this is sufficient in addressing the problem, with no need for any compensation. The company has set aside £4.8 billion for the cost of recovering and rectifying the issue for European customers.
Obviously, we do not agree with their position at all.
It’s time Volkswagen steps up and looks to compensate all customers, which should include Canadian and European customers. However, the wait continues for Canadian and European customers to find out what, if anything, is decided.
