VW may never hear the end of the cheating emissions scandal, as far as I’m concerned!

Recently elected London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, wrote a letter to the German automakers asking them to compensate the Transport for London (TfL) £2.5 million.

This is on top of the thousands we act for, as well as the hundreds of thousands worldwide all asking for their fair share of justice.

80,000 affected vehicles in London

As a huge advocate for clean air, the London Mayor has pressed the VW Group to compensate individuals and, for the focus of the article, TfL.

There is an estimated 500,000 diesel vehicles in London, of which 80,000 have been fitted with the so-called “defeat device” as part of the scandal.

London Mayor’s letter

Mr Khan asked for £2.5 million from the German automakers as a reimbursement for the false belief that the vehicles were greener than they were made out to be. The London Mayor doesn’t hold back in expressing his disappointment by saying that there is “no excuse for the utter lack of action”.

This is the case, as VW has yet to propose satisfactory or even adequate action in the U.K. In comparison, the VW Group is involved in a a $14.7 billion settlement in the U.S. in relation to their 2.0 litre diesel vehicles.

There is a rumour in the mill that VW are looking to make a further settlement in relation to their 3.0 litre vehicles as well soon.

The Mayor’s call for compensation is for the thousands affected, as well as for reimbursement to the TfL. He said:

“I want to see a proper commitment from them to fully compensate the thousands of Londoners who bought VW cars in good faith, but whose diesel engines are now contributing to London’s killer air. I also urge them to reimburse TfL the £2.5 million lost in Congestion Charge revenue, which I will use to fund a new schools air quality programme that will reduce the exposure and raise the awareness of schoolchildren in London attending schools in the most polluted areas.”

This is a more encouraging step from a member of parliament, although it doesn’t change the government’s overall stance on taking no further action. Instead of fighting the German automakers in the courts, the U.K. government said that it’ll “monitor” the ongoing criminal investigation, and that’s that! The Competition and Markets Authority also said that they won’t be pursuing a civil case.
