Volkswagen had previously agreed to settle a group action lawsuit with a number of Canadian owners for selling them cars fitted with the so-called “defeat devices”, but this had not included owners of 3.0-litre vehicles. Now, a settlement has been finally reached in what is an unsurprising victory given that Volkswagen had already paid Canada’s neighbours in the U.S. billions of dollars in settlements and pay-outs, despite ignoring Europe.
Although owners of 2.0 litre engine Volkswagen group vehicles in Canada had their settlements sorted out fairly quickly, those who owned 3.0-litre Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche diesel vehicles had yet to see a penny until now.

Back in autumn of 2015, a colossal scandal broke out that shook the motor industry to its core.
Volkswagen group and its subsidiaries were found to have been cheating car emissions testing through the use of so-called “defeat devices” – a fact of which VW are bizarrely accepting in some countries, and disputing in others. This shocking scandal has also prompted governments and authorities to initiate investigations in various countries across the world.
The impact on owners has been huge.

VW have taken contrasting approaches when it comes to compensating their victims.
In the U.S., there has been a settlement of $15 billion approved by U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in recent weeks. Yet, here in Europe, and in the rest of the world, VW continue to refuse to enter in to settlement negotiations.
German regulators have reportedly approved a fix for 1.2L Volkswagen Group models affected by the emissions scandal – dubbed “dieselgate” in the media.
The fix has been approved for some five million vehicles affected, which accounts for almost half of those affected across the globe, and includes models like the SEAT Ibiza and the Volkswagen Polo.
The fix may be approved, but the question as to how the fix is going to affect vehicles moving forward remains the important one.

We have been inundated with concerned victims who have joined our group action – here’s the latest from our Car Emissions Team.
