Opel has been fined for emissions issues in Germany to the tune of $75m, according to European news agencies. This is another fine in the bag over the ongoing emissions problems that have plagued the car industry for many years now.
According to reports, Opel has been fined for emissions issues that are not related to alleged illegal defeat device technology. What the fine is for is actually is in relation to reportedly providing vehicles that were producing higher levels of emissions than had been reported to German regulators.
Opel is one of the brands that are a part of the Stellantis N.V group, with related brands that include Peugeot, Fiat, Citroën, and Vauxhall. The latter brand of Vauxhall is essentially the twin sister brand that we have here in the UK, so they are effectively the same brand really.
Although Opel has been fined for emissions issues, as confirmed above, this has been reported to not be in relation to allegations of using “defeat device” technology. Related brands are facing compensation claims and allegations of using such technology, but this $75m fine that was reportedly paid last year was said to be for “violation of documentation obligations”. It is reportedly not for any kind of criminal or intentional act, and Opel maintains that its vehicles are legal and compliant.
Although there have been some recalls related to certain emissions issues, again, these are not being put into the same category as VW in relation to allegations of defeat device software.
Although Opel has been fined for emissions issues in Germany, they are unrelated to allegations of technology that could amount to a “defeat device” in the UK.
